Tooth
Extractions
Sometimes
it is inevitable to have a tooth removed or
extracted. Although it is not extremely painful,
you will usually be given a local anesthetic
just prior to the extraction. The time that
you will experience numbness will vary depending
on the type of anesthetic used, and should
dissipate after a few hours.
After
the tooth has been extracted, you may have
some discomfort and/or swelling. You can
usually reduce the pain by applying a cold
compress to the swelled area, within the first
24 hours.
You
will want to drink lots of fluids and eat
softer foods. Try to avoid drinking hot liquids,
or using a straw to drink through, and chew
on the opposite side of the mouth. Pressure
caused by sucking through a straw or smoking
cigarettes can dislodge the blood clot that
has formed in the now empty socket, which
can be extremely painful.
